NOUN: The well-known Part of Speech.

There are eight (8) parts of speech that should be learned by the students who are studying the English as Second Language, the most well-known is the NOUN, it is a word that names a person, a place, a thing, an event or an idea. There are different Kinds of Noun, first is the Common and Proper Nouns. A common noun refers to a general category of people, places things and ideas, note that it is not capitalized, while the proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, thing or idea; it always begins with a capital letter. Second one, is the Concrete and Abstract Nouns. A concrete nouns name a thing, people, and places as well as everything that can be perceived through the senses, while the abstract noun name concepts, qualities, emotions, conditions, and attitudes which have no material existence. Third is the Compound Nouns, a compound noun consists of two or more words used together to name one person, place, or thing. There are also three (3) kinds of Compound Nouns, one kind of compound noun consists of two or more words joined together, for example: sky + diver= skydiver. Another kind of compound noun consists of words joined by one or more hyphens, for example: light-year and brother-in-law. A third kind of compound noun consists of two or more words that are used together, though not joined, to create a single noun, for example: high school, air force and jet engine. Fourth kind of a noun is the Collective Noun, a collective noun stands for a whole group of people, places, things, or ideas, for example: A pride of lions lived in the zoo. Another kind of noun is the Count and Mass nouns, Count nouns refer to objects that can be counted like books, tables, and houses, while Mass nouns, refer to things that cannot be counted individually, such as love, food, knowledge and kindness. So if there are different kind of noun, there are also a GENDER of NOUNS, first is Masculine which refers to persons or animals of the male kind, for example: groom, lion, king and rooster. Another is Feminine, refers to persons or animals of female kind for example: bride, lioness, queen and hen. Next is Neuter, refers to objects with no gender, such as house, car, package and handkerchief. Lastly Common, which refers to a noun that are either male or female, for example: citizen, singer, visitor and cat. These are the factors that we should always remember and take note about NOUN.
